Jason Wuestenberg

After serving in the US Army, ​Jason became a police officer for the Phoenix Police Dept. (AZ) in 1994. Phoenix PD is the largest agency in Arizona and had as many as 3200+ officers. Jason retired in 2017 after 22+ years of service and held a supervisor / leadership position for the last 9 years of his career.


For the last 6 years of his career Jason served as a Rangemaster and was on the agency's Firearms Committee, Training Needs Committee, and Tactical Review Committee which conducted analysis of tactics that were applied in officer-involved shootings. In addition, Jason served as a training and policy advisor for the agency's Use of Force Board which determines if an officer-involved shooting is in or out of policy. Jason was also a Firearms Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZ POST).


As an agency Rangemaster, Jason's responsibilities included:

  • Supervising fulltime and adjunct firearms instructors
  • Conducting selection process for firearms instructors
  • Supervising firearms training programs
  • Reviewing and approving training outlines
  • Advising on development / revision of firearms policies
  • Supervising daily range operations
  • Supervising firearms qualifications
  • Conducting / supervising rifle instructor certification courses
  • ​Conducting / supervising shoot house training programs


Jason obtained 20+ law enforcement instructor certifications over his career. Jason also obtained an Associates degree in Law Enforcement Technologies, a Bachelors degree in Career & Technical Education, and a Masters degree in Leadership.


Jason founded the National Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors Association (NLEFIA) in 2015 and served as the Executive Director for 10 years where he created several instructor development and certification courses and supervised over 15 national instructors. 


​As the Executive Director, Jason's responsibilities included:

  • Select and supervise staff instructors across the nation
  • Develop, review, and revise various firearms instructor development & certifications programs to be conducted across the nation
  • Supervise the daily operations of the association
  • Manage various budgets and cashflow
  • Plan accordingly for growth and expansion of the association


Jason has been a presenter at several conferences and has covered topics such as rangemaster responsibilities, firearms qualifications, developing various firearms programs, and developing instructor-level training. Jason also co-authored two books titled..... Law Enforcement Rangemaster: A Foundational Guide and Law Enforcement Advanced Firearms Instructor.  In addition, Jason is a columnist for Police1.com.


​Jason is highly qualified to evaluate and make recommendations on agency firearms policies, firearms training programs, and range operations. A resume or curriculum vitae is available upon reqeust.
